Achieving The Best We Can

Sixth Form: World of Work Week

Date: 9th Dec 2024 @ 10:26am

Last week in Sixth Form all of our pupils were off timetable as it was our World of Work Week. The pupils have had many fantastic opportunities to get out in the community and learn new skills in school. In the Sixth Form we have been focussing upon work experience as we prepare for adulthood; here are some of the wonderful things our pupils have been getting up to.
On Monday, a group of pupils went for a tour of Ribby Hall where they had the fantastic opportunity to look at all the different roles and responsibilities of a range of jobs across the site. The students got a behind the scenes tour of the banquet hall and were able to go and have a look through the stock room and have a sneak peak at what was in the fridges and freezers. After this, they went to the Spar shop to see what jobs need doing in the shop. Next, the students had the opportunity to have a look at the Wild Discovery Centre where the students helped make food for the monkeys!

Back in school our remaining students took part in a Catering session by the wonderful Shirin. The students watched and helped make vegetable pakoras and were even able to sample these…it’s safe to say this was the best part for some pupils!
Tuesday was a big day for placements, one was to Blackpool train station where the students experienced first hand what it was like to work on the trains, in the ticket office and even got to sound the train's horn. Another group went to Dawson’s Emporium where the students worked as sales assistants and got to experience first hand what it’s like to work in a shop.
On Wednesday, a group went to Woodhouse and Plant Nursery where the students got the chance to see how Integrate make money by repurposing wood. We were even able to look at the work of the Bike shop to see how they repair and restore bikes they sell back to the general public. Following this, we took a trip to the plant nursery where we saw how Sew & Grow grew plants and flowers to sell in their shop at Haslam Park.

On Thursday, we became radio DJ’s as our pupils worked alongside the wonderful Darran to create a radio show filled with their favourite songs and even recording the introductions to the songs. More info to come about this so watch this space!

On Friday, some of our pupils visited a local pre-school to work alongside children as TA’s, playing with the children, reading them stories and following instructions from unfamiliar adults. Meanwhile, some of our students attended Ridgeway Farm to do some hands on manual labour to support this wonderful charity and work alongside animals, feeding the pigs and doing some ground maintenance and were rewarded with a lovely hot chocolate!

We also visited Extra Time, serving drinks and playing bingo with the community, attended Naffi Break serving hot breakfast sandwiches to veterans and visited a local children’s clothes shop, Second Chance, to help sort stock and bring life back to preloved items. In the MSI provision, the students explored their senses baking, exploring the different ingredients, mixing them and smelling the different scents to develop their communication skills.

It was a fabulous week filled with wonderful opportunities and we are so grateful to everyone in our school community and the local community who helped make this such a success.
