Compass Centre blog of the week: Active literacy, attention autism and world of work week

Date: 30th Nov 2023 @ 3:50pm

Happy Thursday everyone,

We hope you are having a fantastic week 😊

This week in the Compass Centre we have been continuing our focused topic of the term, ‘space’. During our attention autism sessions all our learners have accessed a range of stage one to three activities, including, watching Beth create space themed shadows with star and moon stencils and a torch, as well as independently choosing different coloured and to fill in planet pictures. In addition, our learners have been accessing two spaced themed sensory stories in active literacy. One of the stories involved the learners to ‘look up’ as they attempted to witness a rocket flying up into the sky - other activities included learning about Mae Jemison, counting down and launching a rocket into the sky and smelling coca powder as if we were drinking hot chocolate. Everyone was throughly engaged, well done all!

In addition to our routined sessions, some of our functional learners have been taking part in World of Work Week. World of Work Week is designed to raise the aspirations of learners and increase their awareness and knowledge about the range of career opportunities available out there in the big wide world. This week, some of our students have taken part in various tasks in our local community including: delivering the local Advertiser, using money to pay for a treat, helping out at a local hairdressers by sweeping the floor and making cups of tea, joining a talk with civil service professionals, learning about key skills by playing a game of jenga, and carrying out tasks at Dawsons Arts and Crafts Emporium. Great work everyone, we are very impressed!
