Elm Tree Class: All About Sound

Date: 11th Oct 2024 @ 3:47pm

Hi everybody,

Welcome back to the Elm Tree Class blog.  As usual, it has been a busy week with lots of hard work from everyone.

We have been learning all about sound in Science this half term.  We have focussed on key vocabulary and learned that sound is made when vibrations travel through a medium.  This can be a solid, liquid or gas.  We have also been learning what the words volume and pitch mean; volume is how loud or quiet a sound is and pitch is how high or low the sound is.

Pupils have been exploring changing the volume of different instruments by hitting them hard or softly and what happens if we hit them with beaters made of different materials.  They have also been exploring changing the pitch of the note on a guitar by sliding their fingers up and down the fret board whilst playing a note.

Some pupils have been developing their observation skills by playing 'Sound Bingo' and naming what they hear.  This has been extended by asking if the sound is loud/quiet, animal/vehicle or natural/machine.

That’s all for now, have a great weekend.
